Precautions to toxicity, racism and bigotry

Hello,

I wanted to ask the staff if there’s going to be moderation on the server. The main problem with private servers, in my experience, is that many times the chats turn into echo chambers for racist and toxic people, and there’s barely, if any, ever any moderation of the chat.

So my main question is: Will the report button work? Are there any precaution for these situations? Will toxic, racist and disciriminatory behavior based on race, gender or sexual orientation be a bannable offense?

I’d like to know if staff will be actively looking into these things as well. Toxic behaviour is already present in small amounts here on the forums, let alone in-game. This toxicity is a big reason for many people to quit playing a social MMORPG like WoW Vanilla.

From the Discord rules:

2. Please keep all chat in English. The following topics or chat conduct will not be tolerated:
→ Racism
→ Sexism
→ Politics
→ Religion
→ Violence
→ Sexual Orientation Slurs
→ Hate Speech of ANY kind
→ Drugs and any illegal or illicit activity.
→ Sex & Obscenity

3. Excessive derogatory/explicit language or malicious personal attacks.

10. Spam or overuse of copy/pasta and emojis that disrupts the flow of chat is not permitted.

I’d imagine that we can expect similar rulesets for within the game. The problematic part is “toxicity”, as it’s a very vague term and is hard to regulate/control. I think, it is - for the most part - the job of the community itself to encourage/discourage proper behavior. We will see how the mood on the server turns out, I guess.

Maybe there are still some measures staff could take to try to steer people in a good direction. I’m not sure what it could be, keen to hear your ideas.
Let’s say they implement a system message that reminds players that playing the server is something people do in their free time to relax and have fun. That we are all actual human beings behind the screen. To treat each other with respect and make the time spent together a more positive experience in general. Now would something like that have any bit of influence? I’m not so sure.

Just ignore them man, who cares what some idiots on the internet are saying.

I am also curious to know. With the level of discourse online lately, if there isnt some strong moderation, world chat quickly turns into a sea of bigotry and hate. Please don’t let the server be a cesspit like other private servers.

Can I RP a character that is racism toward gnome ?

Those little bastard could not even hold gnomeregan versus a bunch of level 28.

I would like there to both be moderators to crack down on legit issues, as well as crack down on pot stirring concern trolls.

Will it be considered racism (race discrimination) if I call a red haired character “Ginger”?

Just ‘ignoring’ bigoted people on WoW servers leads to a more and more toxic community. Seen it happen on multiple servers. Rules need to be ACTIVELY enforced, meaning, moderators need to be in game and monitoring world chat, not relying on people to report over and over and over. Warmane servers for example only ban for ~2 days for racism, and rely solely on reports. World chat there regularly devolves into Nazi level bigotry to the point where you have to DL ignore list extension addons. No one should have to see the kind of shit that lackluster moderation encourages when they just want to relax and play a game. Anyone suggesting otherwise has some pretty obvious motives.

I guess you are assuming that if you are against censorship and personal responsibility you must be a bigot and a racist. I consider myself neither and i still would not argue in favor of censorship. But i also have not seen this ‘‘nazi level bigotry’’ since i just /ignore the usual suspects.
They are either a minority, so its not a problem. Or they are the majority, in which case we have a problem.
Its very frightening to me to see so many people argue for censorship, not just here, but on multiple platforms. Scary stuff.

People being thrown in jail for criticising the people in power is scary. What exactly is frightening about people not wanting to see openly bigoted shit being spewed in chat while they’re trying to enjoy the game?

I’m definitely with OP in encouraging the staff to at least take a strong stance against bigotry. I’m not a carebear, I don’t need a safe space, people can be dickheads and flame each other in chat all they want, doesn’t bother me - but there’s a clear line between that and bigotry and anyone who says otherwise is deluding themselves.

You need to read what @Joliene_Washington is saying. People that are easily offended are not scary, the call of those people to just censor/cancel the shit out of everything they don’t like is scary. If some 13yo wan’t to give his best Hitler impersonation every single day, just /ignore that cunt, calling for staff to monitor ever single outing that might be offensive to someone is not the way to go and probably not something that they want to do. In short, grow a pair, /ignore idiots and carry on playing a game you enjoy.

I feel like you are just the same person but on a different account. I am not deluding myself, and i do not have pretty obvious motives. Arguing for censorship, with whatever goal you have in mind, remains arguing for censorship - and that is scary. Especially when you are given the tools to create your own proverbial safespace by /ignoring people.

I read things i dont like every day, but you develop a shield to protect yourself against that. Thick skin. Ive experienced racism first hand, it sucks. There are dicks on this planet, but on the internet you can literally make it so they will no longer exist to you. The idea that censorship is a solution to this problem is beyond me.

So you would rather allow racism and bigotry because moderating it is a form of censorship? Lmao, f#ck off. You’re just the part of the problem why the internet is such shitty place. Your galaxy brain censorship take is just enabling recists to have yet another platform. Gtfo.
What we’re talking about and what’s going on other servers is hatespeech and hatespeech shouldn’t be allowed anywhere. If it isn’t moderated, it will spiral into another 4chan level discourse, like on some other private servers. It’s pretty obvious what we have in mind and if you don’t get it or you’re against it, you’re an id*ot, simple as that.
